In Class Oil Pastel Drawing- Progession

Three Sentence Description of Drawing

My self-portrait will be more of an idealistic approach rather than a naturalistic one. It will be a depiction of my idea of the best possible version of myself. I intend to use oil pastel to enhance the illusion of three-dimensionality and create an overall very smooth, very blended drawing.

Online Reading: Portrait of An Artist

"The surface of the human body, what it reveals about the inner world of the person, and how it relates to the world outside of us in the greater scheme of things is extremely compelling."- Gwen Hardie

I was drawn to this artist's work on the blog because she has an interesting approach to the depiction of the human body. She uses oil paint to demonstrate the body in a metaphysical point-of-view rather than a literal one. A combination of techniques that she uses allows the viewer to experience her work as an illusion which is depicting both the inner and outer self of the human body in connection with the natural world. The things I immediately noticed when I observed her work were the shadows and highlights, the use of soft and simple lines, the natural blending of forms and shapes, and the use of warm and cool colors that all complement each other appropriately. These elements contribute to her goal of showing three-dimensionality.

I definitely plan to incorporate some of her strategies into my own work. One aspect that sets her apart from a lot of other artists is that she focuses on the magnification and decontextualization of skin. I am considering taking the approach of a close-up observation for my drawing because it will reflect one aspect of my personality appropriately-- my specific attention to detail. I also plan to use the same artistic style that she uses. I want to use soft lines and shading with both warm and cool colors in order to portray myself the way I imagine would be the best possible version of myself.

Drawing In Relation To Attitude/Emotion/ Feeling

Taken from Instagram, @HaydenWilliams

One quote that stood out to me was "drawing is a feeling, an attitude that is betrayed in its handling as much as in the materials used." I completely agree with this quote. Drawing, to me, acts as an outlet for any emotions that an artist wishes to convey to an audience. It allows viewers to be drawn into a distinct environment in which they can recognize an idea in a different light. The feeling or emotion that is revealed in a drawing can be influenced by the way it is implemented. Artists like Hayden Williams, produce renderings of designs with materials as basic as pens and markers, yet his creations emit a dominant, sassy and feminine attitude. The use of these basic materials complements his ideas well because they seem to elevate the quality of the renderings, making them desirable and intriguing. This is an example of a good drawing, in my opinion, because it depicts a level of obscurity which gains a feeling of mystery behind the woman who wears it. The garment is composed of lace and a thick velvety material. Lace seems appropriate to incorporate because it only reveals a certain amount of the body, just as the mask she wears only reveals a certain amount of the face.
